Deloitte and Wichita State University Join Forces to Launch New Smart Factory

Deloitte and Wichita State University today announced the launch of The Smart Factory @ Wichita, a groundbreaking and immersive experiential learning environment that will accelerate the future of manufacturing as innovation and new technologies continue to reshape operations and the modern enterprise.

Deloitte and Wichita State are constructing the brand-new facility on Wichita State’s Innovation Campus, which will include a full-scale production line, dedicated space for select ecosystem sponsors and experiential labs exploring smart factory capabilities. A smart factory is a highly digitized and connected production facility that uses technologies such as artificial intelligence, Internet of Things and robotics to manufacture products. Working alongside humans, smart factories can self-adapt and autonomously optimize manufacturing operations. The Smart Factory @ Wichita will make digital transformations real by demonstrating how to merge existing technologies with new innovations, sparking a dialogue about how companies can accelerate their journey towards scalable and sustainable capabilities.

“Smart factory solutions are becoming even more important as companies re-evaluate the resiliency and agility of their supply chains, which can determine an organization’s success in the marketplace and the success of entire ecosystems,” said Nishita Henry, chief innovation officer at Deloitte Consulting LLP. “Together with Wichita State, Deloitte will create a unique experience that captures the innovation, value proposition and disruptive technological capabilities of the smart factory.”

The Smart Factory @ Wichita will be a net-zero impact smart building on a smart grid featuring 60,000 square feet of sustainable space. The end-to-end smart production line will demonstrate the art of the possible through advanced manufacturing methods and technologies and will also manufacture STEM education interactive kits that will be donated to local organizations in support of Deloitte’s advancement of STEM education initiatives.

The facility is expected to open to clients, industry partners and students next year. It is the evolution of Deloitte’s existing experience at Wichita State, which features more than 40 robots, robotic programs and cyber applications, 26 AR/VR assets and high-end data visualizations, 10 types of 3D printers, nine reverse engineering machine types, 21 professional engineering software programs and more. It offers a compelling experience in which the digital, physical, and experimental come together — for educators, collaborators, and clients — providing the opportunity to see how Industry 4.0 can make an impact and spur innovation and smart factory capabilities.

The Smart Factory Advantage

Smart factory technologies can dramatically improve business performance. In a recent Deloitte study, 86% of manufacturers surveyed believe that the smart factory will be the main driver of manufacturing competitiveness in five years. The study also showed that early adopters of smart factory initiatives are observing double-digit improvements across labor productivity, factory capacity utilization and total production output.

A smart factory can also address sustainability. Advancing technologies can streamline operations to promote sustainable practices, ultimately reducing environmental impact.

NetApp Breaks Ground For Building on Wichita State University Innovation Campus

Work has begun on a permanent new home for NetApp’s Wichita operations on the Wichita State University Innovation Campus, near 17th Street and Innovation Blvd. It is expected to open in early 2022.

The 168,000-square-foot LEED Silver building is designed as an open office plan, with 600+ workstations. The data center will be outfitted with 420 racks for NetApp’s product development purposes. Developing a permanent home on Innovation Campus will allow the company to work even more closely with WSU students, faculty and other researchers.

NetApp, a world leading solutions provider in digital transformation, is already one of the largest employers of Wichita State students and alumni. NetApp is a Fortune 500 global data storage and cloud management company, headquartered in Sunnyvale, California.

The entrance to the building will be through a two-story pedestrian mall that will serve as the entrance for NetApp, along with a kitchen and dining area for the public. NetApp’s plan includes a public outdoor recreation space with a multi-layered water ecosystem, seated terraces, and a multi-sport court for pickle ball and basketball.

The company held an online virtual groundbreaking Wednesday (May 27) for its employees. The groundbreaking showed earthmoving on the site by Crossland Construction, a full 3D walkthrough of the planned building and site by GLMV and included brief remarks from Wichita State President Jay Golden and NetApp’s Brad Anderson, Executive VP Hybrid Cloud Group, Kim Stevenson, SVP & GM FDSBU, and Robin Huber, site manager of Wichita operations.

While the new building is under construction, NetApp has leased Innovation Campus Partnership 3 Building, on 18th near Oliver, as a temporary home for many of its operations and employees. Most employees are currently working from their homes and will continue to do so while COVID-19 remains a major health concern.

Looking beyond that time, President Golden said: “I fully expect that NetApp’s deepening collaboration with Wichita State will change the company, university and the broader community in many positive ways. The collaboration with NetApp is a cornerstone of the university’s new National Institute for Digital Transformation.

“It is an ambitious effort.” Golden said, “to harness the university’s strengths in computer sciences, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, convergence sciences, fine arts and humanities to advance human knowledge, provide hands-on learning experiences for students and create economic growth for Wichita and Kansas.”

Golden told NetApp employees: “I believe that bringing our students and faculty in close contact with NetApp’s people and expertise will spark new ideas that will be beneficial to university research, your customers and, ultimately, to companies and device users around the world. Your presence on this campus will be good for Wichita and the region’s economic recovery, as we collaborate to provide world-leading technologies from Wichita.”

Huber said: “NetApp has been deeply involved with GLMV Architecture in the design of the building and is looking forward to working with students and faculty as part of Wichita State’s research emphasis on digital transformation. From the company’s standpoint, we expect our presence on the Wichita State Innovation Campus to help us attract and retain excellent employees. This is the next logical step in NetApp’s 20+ year partnership with Wichita State.”

Greenbay Packaging Groundbreaking

A packaging company is planning to triple its footprint by building a new 550,000-square-foot corrugator facility in Tulsa County.

Green Bay Packaging (GBP) is set to begin construction Sept. 1 on the “super plant,” which is scheduled to begin operation in October 2021.

The facility will replace the existing 180,000-square-foot factory at 6106 W. 68th St. S. in Creek County and will be equipped with a new 110-inch Fosber corrugator and state-of-the-art, high-speed flexo folder gluers and rotary die cutters. Crossland Construction is the general contractor.

“Green Bay Packaging is a long-standing partner of the Chamber, and we are thrilled they’re expanding their footprint in Tulsa,” Mike Neal, president and CEO of the Tulsa Regional Chamber, said in a statement. “Despite the challenging circumstances, we’ve witnessed innovation and growth from many area companies, which is a testament to the region’s world-class employers like Green Bay Packaging. This investment is a step forward in the region’s economic recovery and we thank Green Bay Packaging for their continued partnership.”

The new plant will be located in Polson Industrial Park in west Tulsa County, a company spokeswoman said.

Founded in 1933 and based in Green Bay, Wisconsin, GBP has had operations in Tulsa for more than 50 years. It operates 32 facilities in 14 states.

“We are excited to continue to invest in our employees and customers of Oklahoma,” Will Kress, president and CEO of GBP, said in a statement. “The Tulsa operation is an important part of GBP, and the leadership and employees of this division are second to none. We believe in investing in our people and our loyal customers and we are looking forward to the next phase in Tulsa.”

The Tulsa announcement mirror’s GBP’s recent growth. Over the last 24 months, GBP completed substantial expansions of their Green Bay and Minneapolis shipping container plants and started a 175,000-square-foot sales, marketing and distribution center in Downers Grove, Illinois, earlier this year. The company also secured a minority ownership position of the leading digital printing company, Company Box.

“We believe in this industry and our employees and customers,” Bryan Hollenbach, executive vice president of GBP, said in a statement. “Our new paper mill is tracking right on time with a projected startup in the first quarter of 2021. The new Tulsa operation is a significant investment in our personnel and the future of this business. It is a fun time to be working for GBP.”

Crossland Announces Opening of Hyatt Place at WSU

Wichita, KS – Crossland Realty Group, in partnership with J.P. Tulsa County Family Center for Juvenile Justice

Tulsa, OK – Crossland was proud to build the Tulsa County Family Center for Juvenile Justice, which replaced the dilapidated Tulsa County Juvenile Bureau. The new 7-acre, 151,000 SF facility houses the Tulsa County Juvenile Court, Tulsa County Juvenile Bureau, Probation and Parole and Community Intervention, and all support agencies on one campus.

A two-story building on the west side of the campus houses the Juvenile Court, Juvenile Bureau, and supporting agencies, plus courtrooms, judges’ chambers, training rooms, and glass-front offices.

Tulsa-Justice-(16)-(1)The Family Center, designed around compassion and hope, has a vibrant foyer, open atrium, and children’s play area. Soothing colors and spacious rooms help kids feel safe and comfortable. Paintings by local artists and furniture crafted by Oklahoma Correctional Industries inmates give it a fun and creative feel.

The detention facility is on the east side of the complex. Twenty-one beds, dayrooms, a guard station, showers, a multipurpose room, and laundry area are in each of three pods. A full-size gymnasium gives teens in detention a place to stay active. This building also houses a library, classrooms, a learning lab, probation offices, and a full-service cafeteria and kitchen. The east and west buildings connect via a secure corridor and spacious outdoor recreation area. 

A FAMILY CENTER DESIGNED AROUND COMPASSION AND HOPE

Tulsa families and youths in crisis now have a more safe and welcoming facility to serve 6000+ youth and their families annually. 

For our part, Crossland received a remarkable letter from the Director of the Tulsa County Family Center for Juvenile Justice. He expressed his appreciation for a Crossland team member who exceeded his traditional role by working over the weekend to help clean and prepare the facility to open on time. Going above and beyond is at our core. We make sure our clients are happy and satisfied. In an industry where so much of the focus is on the product, it’s rewarding to find opportunities to go the extra mile – particularly those projects with significant community impact.

McKinney Fire Station #10

McKinney-Fire-(17)McKinney, TX – Two thousand acres of beautiful homes make up Trinity Falls, a three-year-old community located six miles from McKinney, TX. As McKinney and the surrounding areas experience population growths, the need for additional fire protection also increases. The City of McKinney chose Crossland to build McKinney Fire Station No. 10, a modern, 16,000 SF facility that sits on three acres and accommodates up to ten firefighters. The station’s design is similar to Station No. 9 – built in 2018 – and included input from the firemen.  

Heritage and service are pillars of community fire stations. New stations will often hold open houses for the public they serve, with kids delighting at the shiny, red trucks and ladders that lift firefighters super high. But a century ago, fire stations were merely buildings that housed horse-drawn pumpers. In the decades since, fire department missions have evolved from primarily responding to fires, to a full-service public safety agency. They now dispatch to vehicle accidents, hazmat incidents, specialized rescues, and natural disasters.

A lot of planning goes into optimizing the space, so firefighters have a safe and useful environment that serves as their place of work, residence, and often a community center.

Training and Safety 

The Pre-Construction phase of the Station No. 10 project focused on accommodating the size and scope of fire and rescue vehicles while meeting the needs of the first responders who operate out of the station.  

There are three drive-through apparatus bays, so the No. 10 crew is always prepared and ready to respond. The bays include vehicle exhaust removal systems, compressed air, power drop lines, and hot/cold-water connections. We built upper and lower mezzanine-levels and installed extended catwalk framing above the interior space to house the IT closet and HVAC equipment. Three bright red, powder-coated overhead bay doors catch the eye of residents as they drive by.

McKinney-Fire-(24)The need for training has increased as firefighters expand their scope of community support. They use several areas of the station to keep the team as prepared as possible. There is a large community room that is used for education programs and can be leased out for community events.

A large crawl space/maze was added to the upper level of the station for firefighters to train in wearing their gear. In another area, sections of the floor have cutouts that simulate when a structure has collapsed. A white, cinder block “window” above the apparatus bays is used as a propel training wall.  

Standard rooms and features include a GearGrid locker system for uniform storage, a temperature-controlled med storage room, and spacious firehose racks. For safety, there is a decontamination room – with hazmat shower, along with a temperature-controlled, tornado safety room.  

Quality of Life 

Twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, you can find firefighters at the station as they work in continuous 24-hour shifts. A comfortable living environment is paramount. Station No. 10 provides each firefighter with a dorm room, including a bed, desk, and a locker to store personal items. A spacious kitchen lets the hungry crew spread out at mealtime, and each shift has its own, locked pantry. 

Other residential areas include a laundry room, fitness room, sauna, movie/TV room, and a covered, 1,800 SF outdoor patio, with a grill and mounted TV. 

Fire stations are so much more than just a garage; they are vital to community safety and public trust. We are honored to have been a part of this vital community project.
