WOKA Whitewater Park

Gathering Place

Other firms said it was impossible. We asked, “When can we start?”

A large playground slide shaped like two blue herons stands among tall green structures, on a colorful blue and green rubber surface, with trees and wooden towers in the background.
A modern lounge with large windows showing trees outside, a central stone fireplace with a burning fire, wooden floors, and uniquely designed, sloped wooden ceilings. Contemporary chairs are set near the windows.
A modern building with a white, sail-like roof is brightly lit and reflected in a calm body of water at night, surrounded by trees under a deep blue sky with a visible moon.

When the George Kaiser Family Foundation needed help bringing their vision for The Gathering Place to life, they called us in to get the project back on track. The site was already $50M over budget and facing major challenges, but our team was ready to step in, align with their goals, and deliver the park Tulsa had been dreaming of.

We partnered closely with the Foundation, top landscape architects, and designers to rework the plan, maximize the budget, and move the project forward without compromising quality. From six miles of pathways and land bridges to playgrounds, pavilions, and custom-built spaces, we handled the details, managed complex logistics, and even self-performed major scopes to keep everything on schedule. The result? A nationally recognized, award-winning destination that has redefined what’s possible for urban parks.

WOKA White Water Kayak Park

Blasting Rock, Diverting a River, and Building Something Incredible

From 2020 to 2023, we partnered with the Walton Family Foundation to bring their vision for WOKA Whitewater Park to life, a $29.4M, world-class outdoor destination in Watts, Oklahoma. The project called for blasting through limestone, diverting part of the Illinois River, and creating a 1,200-foot whitewater channel designed for both thrill-seekers and families alike.

Building a park of this scale required creativity and precision. Our team managed complex challenges, from river diversion and limestone blasting to crafting custom whitewater features, while protecting wildlife, wetlands, and surrounding communities. Using innovative construction methods like lidar mapping, sculpted concrete, and phased boulder placement, we turned a bold concept into a safe, functional, and one-of-a-kind experience.

Most importantly, this project was built through partnership. By coordinating with multiple agencies, local governments, and the Cherokee Tribe, we delivered a regional destination that celebrates adventure, recreation, and community. At Crossland, we know how to navigate complexity and bring big visions to life, all while keeping safety, sustainability, and collaboration at the heart of every decision.

A group of people stand on a rooftop deck above a colorful shipping container painted with a wave and the word "WOKA," while a kayak leans against the container and a person stands alone below. The sky is clear and blue.
Several people are kayaking and paddleboarding on a river with rocky banks, navigating through small rapids. The river is bordered by stone and a walking path, with one person sitting under a shaded area.
A riverside recreation area features grassy lawns, a modern building with "WOKA" signage, parked cars, and people preparing for water activities near blue rafts and sun shades by a flowing river.
Three people in blue helmets and orange life jackets are white-water rafting through rough rapids, with rocky terrain and flowing water surrounding them.

Spaces That Move People

From community wellness centers to entertainment destinations, we build recreation spaces that bring people together. Projects like the Norman Senior Wellness Center, Bentonville Community Center, and Betty & Bobby Allison Sports Town are designed with one goal in mind — creating places where people can connect, stay active, and thrive. Whether it’s a fitness facility, sports complex, or community gathering space, we focus on maximizing your budget while delivering durable, safe, and welcoming environments.

We also know how to create standout destinations that make a lasting impact. From the high-energy BigShots Golf venues to the multi-phase Expo Square Projects, our team brings experience, innovation, and attention to detail to every project. We’ll work closely with you to understand your vision, manage the complexities, and deliver spaces your community will be proud to call their own.

A modern, multi-level sports facility with illuminated driving range bays overlooks a large artificial turf field at sunset, featuring purple and green colors under a vibrant sky.
Indoor swimming pool with clear blue water, surrounded by white walls and large colorful stained-glass windows. Benches line the walls, and bright sunlight streams in from the windows.
Wide-angle view of an empty indoor rodeo or equestrian arena with a dirt floor, high ceiling, large overhead lights, and steel railings surrounding the arena. The space is spacious and well-lit.

FAQs

What types of community and recreation projects do you build?

We handle a wide range of projects, including parks, trails, splash pads, playgrounds, recreation centers, aquatic facilities, sports complexes, and community gathering spaces. Whether you need a small neighborhood park or a large regional destination, we bring the experience to deliver it.

How early should we involve you in our project?

The sooner, the better. Bringing us in during preconstruction allows us to help with budgeting, scheduling, value engineering, and constructability reviews. We’ll work alongside your team and designers to make sure your vision stays on budget and on schedule.

How do you ensure projects stay on time and on budget?

We focus on clear communication, proactive planning, and self-performance capabilities. By handling key scopes like concrete, steel, and sitework in-house, we maintain better control over schedules and costs. Plus, our project managers coordinate closely with architects, engineers, and city stakeholders to minimize surprises.

Do you work directly with municipalities and public agencies?

Yes! We regularly partner with cities, counties, state agencies, and community organizations. We understand procurement processes, public access requirements, and the importance of transparency when working on taxpayer-funded projects

How do you handle safety in busy community spaces?

Safety is number one for us. We implement strict safety protocols to protect both workers and the public, especially on projects where community access is ongoing. Our award-winning safety program, combined with continuous training and oversight, ensures your project is completed without unnecessary risks.

Can you help make our project sustainable and low-maintenance?

Definitely. We focus on long-term value by recommending materials, systems, and construction methods designed for durability and energy efficiency. We also work closely with designers to incorporate sustainable solutions like stormwater management, native landscaping, and recycled materials when possible.
