Stillwater Fire Station No. 2
New Fire Station Ignites a Bold Future, Honors 86 Years of Service
Stillwater, OK
After 86 years of dedicated service, Stillwater’s historic Fire Station No. 2 has passed the torch to a modern facility designed to meet the growing needs of the community and its first responders. The new 15,000 SF station, represents a significant upgrade that enhances emergency response capabilities while providing a comfortable home for the city’s firefighters.
Built just north of McElroy on Western Avenue, the new station improves access to major roadways and the OSU campus, enabling crews to reach emergencies within their critical four-minute response window. This steel-framed structure features five drive-through apparatus bays, allowing vehicles to move efficiently in and out of the station during emergency calls.
The station’s living quarters accommodate up to 10 firefighters with co-ed sleeping areas, a comfortable day room for rest and recovery, and a fully-equipped exercise room. Health and safety features include a dedicated bunker gear and laundry room separated from living quarters, a hoseless exhaust fume filtration system, and a Bauer air compressor system for efficient on-site refilling of SCBA oxygen tanks. For extreme weather events, the facility includes an F5-rated tornado shelter.
Aesthetic touches blend functionality with local pride – decorative metal panels and a distinctive steel canopy entry element incorporate “OSU Orange” accents throughout. Inside, polished concrete floors and firefighter-red paint create a modern atmosphere, while original signage from the 1938 station is displayed in the day room, honoring the department’s history.
When budget constraints eliminated an outdoor patio from the plans, Crossland stepped up, donating a patio gazebo and gas grill to ensure firefighters had a space to relax outside.
The $8.25 million project wrapped up on schedule and within budget after 18 months of construction. With a community ribbon-cutting ceremony and a warm welcome from firefighters, city leaders, and residents alike, the new station stands as a proud symbol of progress – honoring the past while building a stronger future for Stillwater’s emergency services.
