Baxter Springs Fire Station HQ
Ready When Every Second Matters
Baxter Springs, KS
When the City of Baxter Springs needed to replace their outdated fire station, they turned to us for a comprehensive design-build solution that would serve their community for decades to come. The project called for more than just a standard fire station – it required a facility that could accommodate modern emergency vehicles while providing essential training and operational spaces.
This 12,720 SF facility represents a significant upgrade from the previous station. We worked closely with Hunter & Associates to design a building that prioritizes both functionality and accessibility. The station features three sets of double doors on both the front and back, allowing fire trucks to pull straight through – a critical design element that ensures faster response times and easier equipment access.
One of the standout features is the elevated training center that overlooks the main garage area. This design allows firefighters to observe equipment operations and conduct training sessions with clear visibility of the apparatus floor. The facility also includes modern break rooms and administrative spaces that support daily operations.
Our self-perform approach proved valuable on this project. We handled all concrete work, steel erection, rough carpentry, and finish carpentry in-house, which gave us better schedule control and quality oversight. We also utilized our Crossland Prefab capabilities and prestressed construction methods to streamline the building process.
The biggest challenge came from coordinating with the Kansas Department of Transportation for the new driveway access. KDOT initially resisted the larger driveway design, but we worked persistently to demonstrate why the expanded access was essential for emergency vehicle maneuverability and public safety. The final approval allowed us to build the proper turning radius that large fire trucks require.
Completed in just 8 months for $3.2 million, the project finished exactly on budget – a result that reflects careful planning and efficient execution. The new facility provides Baxter Springs firefighters with the modern, functional space they need to protect their community effectively.
