Crossland Heavy Contractors Hires New Director of Engineering

LOWELL, ARKANSAS – Crossland Heavy Contractors is proud to announce the recent hire of William (Bill) Hagenburger, Director of Engineering.

Hagenburger brings over 30 years of industry experience to Crossland Heavy, working alongside us for the last 15 of those. We met Bill in 2006 when Crossland Heavy landed its most significant deal to date, a $26 million water treatment plant expansion for Beaver Water District. That project, fortunately, came with a committed partner in Beaver Water District and in their Chief Operating Officer, Bill Hagenburger.

“Any time you have a construction project and the opportunity to work with an invested client, that project tends to be more successful,” Dan Thompson, Crossland Heavy Arkansas VP, and Division Manager said.

Hagenburger will significantly grow what our company can offer to municipalities.

“Bill will bring the perspective of an owner which will help our team have a more comprehensive approach in pursuing, designing, and managing a collaborative delivery project,” Thompson said. “Up to this point, CHC has brought the constructability review to a design. Bill will bring the operation and maintenance know-how to that design as well, to show the client that we are concerned about their project from more than just the construction of it, but also to the long-term life cycle cost and ease of operation.”

Hagenburger’s arrival marks a turning point for Crossland Heavy as we continue to solidify our place in the market. We are committed to bringing in the best people to render the highest quality for our clients.

Rachelle Camacho Lands The 2021 Women In Business List

Congratulations to Rachelle Camacho, our Special Projects/Talent Acquisition, in our Wichita Office for being named one of the 2021 Women in Business!

The 2021 honorees will be honored at a luncheon scheduled for Oct. 12 at the Hyatt Regency Wichita.

Hard Hats off to Damian Madrigal

No matter the role or job title, team members who welcome any task given to them are often the backbones of successful companies. That kind of reliability demonstrates dedication. It establishes trust. And those traits are why we’re highlighting Damian Madrigal in our Under the Hard Hat spotlight.

Damian has been with our Texas construction division for five years, working on jobsites in and around Dallas. While he may have the official title of “construction worker,” Damian’s ability and desire to manage many different skills makes his actual role a challenge to pin down. “I wouldn’t say I have one title because I try and help with a little bit of everything, from rebar to grading and finishing concrete. I’ve been a laborer, a form setter, and I also do layout work to let the setters know where to place the concrete. I try to make my role as big as possible and do anything the crew asks of me to keep production up.”

Area Superintendent, Ben Harris, noted that Damian’s natural leadership traits and growth in construction knowledge over the past few years really make him stand out. “Damian brings value by being versatile in his abilities. He’s a good carpenter and is willing to do any task asked of him — travel when the need arises, working nights, weekends, whatever it takes to get the job done.”

With his desire to contribute in many different ways, it’s no surprise that Damian credits the opportunity for growth offered by Crossland as the reason he loves working with us. An excellent example is the Blue Star business park project in Irving, TX. When Texas division leadership recently invested in their own surveying equipment, they chose Damian to lead the new system. From Raul Aceves, Concrete Superintendent: “We asked Damian to learn all the new equipment. He completed the training in an amazing timeframe, asking lots of great questions along the way. That attention to detail will also help him operate the survey equipment in the future.”

Ben Harris agrees. “Damian trained and now assists in operating that machine to get whatever layout we need. In addition, he is responsible for making sure the equipment is charged, safe, and always ready to go. It’s a big responsibility, a big opportunity, and a big advantage for Crossland here in Texas. Damian has done very well with leading that operation.”

We wanted to hear from Damian on the best advice he’s received to help guide him as such a versatile employee. “To show up each day with the right attitude and willingness to help. That’s how I do my part.” Outside of his many roles at Crossland, you’ll find Damian staying active, including hanging out with friends and playing just about any sport. It sounds like his pastimes mimic his skills on the job!

The Value of a Mentor

Like a rising tide that floats all boats, a mentor with a passion for teaching lifts those around them. The peers and apprentices of Mark Robinson will tell you with certainty that this statement applies to him. The impact Mark has made in guiding younger crew members on their professional path with Crossland has earned him the Employee Spotlight.

Tell me, and I forget. Teach me, and I remember. Involve me, and I learn.
Mark has been with our company for 17 years and serves as a lead mentor and trainer for apprentices, including hands-on field training. He also loves being a builder and named Aquarium at the Boardwalk in Branson, MO, as the project that has been most meaningful to him. “That was such a unique build. Definitely, a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity stated Mark.”

Working as a builder while also helping people grow combines both of Mark’s passions into one role. And one that he is exceptionally good at, according to his peers. “Mark’s construction knowledge is unreal. He sees the bigger picture on some of the most difficult self-perform jobs, and he wants his team to be successful. You don’t see leaders like Mark on every jobsite,” said Cody Bobski, Carpentry Foreman-Mentor.

Crossland Heavy Contractors Three-Man Pipelaying Crew

Pipe crew workers are responsible for assembling, connecting, and constructing pipe systems for storm or sanitation sewers, drains, and water mains. These unsung heroes of civic infrastructure have both a physically demanding and often a dirty job – which is exactly why we should praise and spotlight them.

Jeremy Tufts, Edgar Garcia, and John Alban perform their work with diligence and precision. Together, their three-person team has found both camaraderie and momentum. From Jeremy Tufts, Pipe Superintendent: “We’re literally “the” crew. We get along, we eat lunch together, and talk on the weekends.” “When you’re working together with three guys on the same channel, the job is easy, and these guys are like my second family,” added Edgar Garcia.

This skilled crew lays pipe for many different Crossland Heavy projects.

The work is physically demanding, and the men are often knee-deep in the dirt. But, for John Alban, that’s the appealing part of the job. “I like getting out there and working hard, especially with this crew. We’re able to get a lot done in fairly short periods. I just prefer being outside and don’t mind getting dirty.”

Like most construction projects, placing pipes in all kinds of weather — often for more than 40 hours a week with hard-hitting deadlines — is just part of the job. Edgar moved over to the pipe crew after being a concrete finisher for eight years. While he enjoyed the challenges of both roles, he appreciates how quickly they can progress on pipe projects vs. the time constraints that can come with concrete finishing. “I really like working on the Crossland Heavy team!”

They all three commented on the security you feel by working with Crossland. “I’ve been here for almost a year, which is really exciting. And I was finally able to purchase my first house, something I never thought I would be able to do. But with the stability of my job at Crossland, I got to do it. Jeremy Tufts added: “I’m here for the long haul; Crossland takes good care of you.”

They get in early and do their best day in and day out. Thank you to this three-man pipe crew for the dedication to your craft and for making Crossland a success!
