USD 493 – High School Safe Room Addition
Sheltering Students, Growing Futures
Columbus, KS
In Columbus, Kansas – the place where Crossland first began and where our headquarters still stand – projects close to home carry extra meaning. When Columbus High School needed a safe space for students during severe weather, we were honored to step in and help protect the kids in our own community.
The result is a new storm shelter that does more than safeguard lives. Designed to double as classroom space, it gives students room to learn, grow, and feel secure – all under one roof. For us, that combination of safety and education captures what building in our hometown is all about: creating spaces that keep our community strong today while investing in the future.
Over the course of 18 months, our teams poured heart and hard work into every detail, from earthwork to steel and pre-cast installation. With the support of our Prefab division and the dedication of local crews, the project came together seamlessly – on time, on budget, and built to last.
This shelter isn’t just a building. It’s a promise to the families of Columbus that their children are protected, their schools are supported, and their community matters.
