Watkins Elementary School in Springfield, MO, is now safer and more resilient with the addition of a $4.3 million, 10,000-square-foot storm shelter. Designed to provide protection during severe weather, this multi-purpose space also serves as the school’s gymnasium and music room.

Constructed with over 30,000 pounds of precast panels and 95,000 pounds of 100-foot-long double tees, the shelter was built for durability. A crawler crane was used to install the exterior precast concrete, ensuring precision in placement. Inside, the facility features precast walls and tees, athletic flooring, a wood-paneled stage opening, a custom school logo sign, motor-operated basketball goals, and retractable bleachers—creating a fully functional and versatile environment for students.

Building on an active school campus presented logistical challenges, particularly with limited jobsite space. To maintain the school’s existing playground while keeping the project on track, our team adjusted the precast installation method from the original plan—resulting in cost savings for Crossland and uninterrupted recreational space for students.

Close coordination with the school district was key, ensuring that construction progressed smoothly without disrupting daily operations. A temporary rock parking area was implemented to facilitate project phasing, maintaining efficiency while minimizing impact on school activities.
