Jenks Highschool Softball Complex
New $3.3M Softball Complex Built on Former Landfill
Jenks, OK
In Spring 2024, Jenks High School took its softball facilities to the next level with the completion of a new $3.3 million athletic complex. The upgraded site includes a synthetic turf playing field, new masonry dugouts with built-in storage and benches, 40-foot backstop netting, perimeter fencing, and aluminum grandstand bleachers. The nearby practice facility was also upgraded with leveled ground and a fresh artificial turf surface.
One of the project’s most notable challenges stemmed from its location – an abandoned environmental landfill dating back to the 1980s. The presence of mixed trash and unstable soils made traditional construction methods unfeasible. Instead of replacing the landfill soil, which would have significantly raised costs, the field was built on a post-tensioned concrete slab. This system uses tensioned cables within the slab to evenly distribute loads, allowing the entire field to “float” above the compromised ground.
Additional structural fill needs arose during construction that were not originally included in the project scope. To stay on budget, Crossland self-performed this work using internal labor and equipment.
Throughout the project, clear communication between the construction and design teams was critical. Conflicting interpretations of the geotechnical report highlighted the importance of clearly defined bid scopes and responsibility allocation. This proactive approach minimized surprises and ensured transparency for the owner.
The result is a resilient, visually striking facility that provides a safe, high-performance environment for Jenks athletes – built to last for years to come.
