Espy Elementary FEMA Safe Room
Enhancing Community Safety and Recreation in Nixa, Missouri
Nixa, MO
In Nixa, Missouri, the community has taken a significant step towards improving safety during severe weather while also offering recreational opportunities to its residents. This endeavor involved the construction of a state-of-the-art 4,000 square foot FEMA Safe Room on the grounds of Epsy Elementary School. With a total project cost of $2 million, the facility not only serves as a shelter during storms but also boasts a full-fledged basketball court.
Project Features:
Exterior Finish: The building exterior showcases sandblasted concrete, creating a durable and visually appealing facade. Additionally, metal panels featuring the school’s logo and mascot enhance the front of the building, giving it a distinct identity within the community.
Interior Layout: The interior of the FEMA Safe Room primarily consists of a full-sized basketball court. In addition, the east side of the facility includes essential amenities such as two bathrooms, a closet, an office, and a utility room, ensuring that it can cater to the needs of both students and the community.
Challenges Faced:
While the project was successfully completed, it was not without its share of challenges. The primary challenge encountered during construction was related to earthwork. During the earthwork, unsuitable soils were discovered, which led to a delay with the subcontractor. To ensure the project’s timely completion, Crossland’s own self-performance crews stepped in to supplement the subcontractor’s efforts, and they carried out the remaining work.
This project also served as a learning opportunity for precast walls and installation. This experience enabled the team to develop expertise in this area, contributing to the project’s overall success.
This project exemplified the power of collaboration and was delivered on time and within budget.
