WSU NIAR Hub for Advanced Manufacturing
Where Research, Industry, and Manufacturing Converge
Wichita, KS
The future of aviation innovation takes flight at Wichita State University’s newest facility – a sophisticated research and development center designed to push the boundaries of manufacturing technology. The $57.4 million National Institute for Aviation Research Hub for Advanced Manufacturing Research (NIAR HAMR) represents a significant investment in aerospace education and industry advancement.
This 168,283 SF facility houses cutting-edge robotics and advanced manufacturing laboratories where tomorrow’s aviation breakthroughs come to life. The building’s design reflects its dual purpose: supporting rigorous research while providing an inspiring educational environment. Large-scale lab spaces accommodate complex machinery and testing equipment, while second-floor classroom areas feature polished finishes that create a professional learning atmosphere.
Our team delivered this specialized facility, working closely with Tessere architects to bring their vision to reality. The 21-month construction timeline demanded careful coordination, particularly as the project neared completion. We implemented a phased approach that allowed the university to begin moving in critical equipment, some arriving from overseas, while our crews completed final details in other areas.
The building’s exterior combines traditional brick with modern metal panels and extensive glass curtain walls, creating a structure that feels both grounded and forward-looking. Inside, distinctive cloud ceiling features add visual interest to the research spaces, while terrazzo flooring throughout provides the durability needed for heavy equipment and high foot traffic.
Our steel erection crews self-performed the structural work, ensuring quality control and schedule coordination for this complex build. Managing the installation sequence proved critical as specialized manufacturing equipment worth millions needed precise placement within the completed structure.
The facility’s importance extends beyond the university campus. Federal funding supported this project, and its opening drew high-profile attendees including the U.S. Secretary of Transportation and congressional representatives. Since opening, the facility has hosted numerous organizations and tours, all responding positively to the space’s functionality and design.
This research hub strengthens Wichita’s position as a center for aviation innovation, providing students and industry partners with access to advanced manufacturing capabilities that will shape the future of flight.
