When McKinney ISD needed to expand Scott Johnson Middle School, they turned to Crossland for a project that would blend educational functionality with life-saving safety features. This ambitious undertaking transformed a simple addition into something extraordinary – two new buildings designed to serve as both modern learning environments and ICC 500-rated storm shelters.

The expansion encompasses 42,700 SF of thoughtfully designed educational space, including a 36,000 SF two-story classroom building and a 6,700 SF specialized band hall. The first floor houses art and general classrooms, while the second floor features state-of-the-art science laboratories and additional learning spaces. The separate band hall creates an impressive auditorium complete with dedicated practice rooms, instrument storage, and specialized acoustical treatments throughout.

What sets this project apart is its dual-purpose construction methodology. Using Insulated Concrete Forming (ICF) technology, massive Styrofoam blocks were filled with concrete to create walls that provide both energy efficiency and storm protection. The structures feature reinforced second-level slabs and concrete lids, essentially creating safe concrete enclosures with storm-rated doors – a critical safety feature for the school community.

The architectural challenge required all exterior elements to seamlessly match the original school building constructed two decades earlier. From brick color and cast stone details to paint selections and wall panels, every exterior finish was carefully coordinated to create visual continuity across the campus.

Inside the band hall, sophisticated acoustical paneling covers wall and ceiling surfaces, creating an optimal environment for musical instruction. The facility includes specialized spaces for orchestra and stringed instruments – a unique program feature for middle school students that demonstrates the district’s commitment to comprehensive arts education.

Project execution faced significant challenges when the original project team departed mid-construction, leaving accounting issues and subcontractor disputes. The incoming team, led by Project Manager Jacob Williams and Superintendent Allyn Wingfield, successfully navigated these obstacles while maintaining the critical completion deadline aligned with the start of the school year.

The project’s success was measured not just in construction quality, but in timing. With substantial completion achieved just days before teacher preparation began, students were able to access their new learning spaces on the first day of school.
