Taking Flight in NWA

Rogers, AR

When is an airplane hangar, not your typical airplane hangar?

When it’s built for the Waltons in Northwest Arkansas.

In the fall of 2023, Crossland completed work on a 38,000 SF private airplane hangar in Rogers, AR. The $6.7 million facility features a conference room, kitchen, full bathroom (with shower), and three office/quiet rooms. Oh, and of course, room for the plane, including a 180′ x 28′ clear door opening.

It’s In the Details

No detail was overlooked or not discussed during this project. We installed full-height liners for a clean interior aesthetic and added large reflectors for safety at the tapered columns.

The steel erection process involved the full-span assembly of sections (columns and rafters) on the ground. Using four cranes, two sections were then lifted into place, with simultaneous installation of purlins and bracing. This method efficiently ensured the structural integrity of the building components.

Aside from battling a typical wet spring to get the slab placed, the concrete work went very well.

Unique Features

Exterior finishes include R-Panel exterior in “Cool Granite Gray” with a galvalume standing seam roof.

Inside, the entire hangar space received epoxy floor and is heated/cooled with radiant heaters and large exhaust fans. The light-gray epoxy creates a very clean, sterile-looking interior of the hangar, broken up only by the bright yellow of the safety reflectors on columns, yellow bollards, and walk path outlined in red.

Interiors of the finished rooms are painted gypsum walls, carpet tiles, and acoustical ceilings, with floor and wall tile at the shower room and LVT at the kitchen.

Also, the entire building is treated with white bird netting to reduce the ability of avian wildlife to perch/nest inside the hangar. It was a challenge to net the entire building, especially in white, but it truly blends in and looks fantastic.

The west side of the hangar abuts a detention pond, and we did not like the mow strip detail, so we added landscape blocks with more aggregate for a cleaner, more finished appearance.

Great Partnership

Working on this project was a joy from beginning to end. We worked really well with the design team and worked through every detail of the project with the client, budgeting options as the design was developed.

It’s also always a pleasure to work with Walton Enterprises. Not only is their CM team easy to work with, but we also have so much respect for the Walton family and all they do for the community. We’re thrilled to have had the opportunity to build a facility they will be using for years to come.
