Melissa ISD Highland Elementary School
A New School, a New Standard
Melissa, TX
When the Melissa School District needed a new elementary campus to serve their growing community, they turned to a construction team ready to tackle significant infrastructure challenges. The result was Melissa Elementary School #5, an 85,000 SF modern educational facility that opened its doors in July 2025.
This $40.99 million project presented unique logistical hurdles from day one. The remote site lacked essential public utilities, requiring the construction team to engineer and install approximately two miles of storm sewer, water, and gas lines to connect the campus to city services. This massive infrastructure undertaking became the project’s defining challenge and greatest achievement.
The new K-5 school showcases thoughtful architectural design with a striking brick exterior complemented by contemporary metal panels. Inside, students and staff enjoy distinctive features rarely seen in elementary education facilities, including polished concrete floors throughout and rich wood ceiling treatments along the main corridor. Wood accent walls and decorative wainscot tile in the hallways create a warm, welcoming environment that elevates the typical school atmosphere.
Beyond standard classroom spaces, the facility includes a central courtyard and playground designed for outdoor learning and recreation. A built-in storm shelter provides essential safety protection for the school community, addressing regional weather concerns with modern safety standards.
Despite the significant utility challenges – which required creative problem-solving including working around livestock on private properties – the project team delivered the completed school on schedule and within budget. The careful coordination between all stakeholders, from the school district through subcontractors and WRA Architects, ensured smooth execution of this complex educational facility.
The ribbon-cutting ceremony marked not just the completion of a building, but the successful creation of essential community infrastructure that will serve Melissa families for generations to come.
