Overcoming Mountain Weather Challenges: Renovating Bergen Elementary School in Evergreen, CO

Evergreen, CO

Anytime you’re working in the Colorado mountains, you know weather could be tricky.

The unpredictable weather in Evergreen, CO, was no exception during this elementary school renovation and expansion project.

Transforming Bergen Valley Elementary School
This nearly $9 million project breathed new life into Bergen Valley Elementary School. The renovation and addition not only improved the facility but also allowed the school district to consolidate elementary schools, renaming this location Bergen Elementary School.

What We Delivered:
Renovation Work: Updated flooring, ceilings, wall paint, and reconfigured spaces for better functionality.

New Addition: A one-story building with additional classrooms to meet the growing needs of the district, plus a pre-K playground.

Improved Accessibility: Constructed a new pickup/drop-off road and enhanced the front entrance with fresh concrete and landscaping.

Mountain-Inspired Design: Exterior finishes feature metal wall panels and longboard accents, seamlessly blending with the mountain environment. The interior design of the addition’s main corridor and front seating area mimics the beauty of the surrounding mountains.

Weathering the Challenges
Mountain winters presented significant hurdles. By the time construction began in the fall, the ground was already frozen, impacting the schedule from day one.

Ground Thawing: We operated two ground-thawing systems for two months to keep underground plumbing work moving.

Snowstorms: A major snowstorm buried the site in several feet of snow, halting work temporarily. Our team rose to the challenge by deploying extra workers to shovel snow, remove 15,000 square feet of concrete blankets, and install multiple heaters, ensuring the trades could continue without significant delays.

Community Support: We also assisted the school district by clearing parking lots and bus drives during storms, ensuring students could access the school safely.

Delivering Ahead of Schedule
Despite the frozen ground and snowstorms, Crossland delivered the project ahead of schedule, ready for the start of the new school year. Our team’s proactive approach—working closely with the owner and design team to finalize plans early and expedite material orders—was key to staying on track.

Together, we built a brighter, stronger future for the students of Evergreen, CO.
