Every Veterans Day, we take time to honor the men and women who have served our country, and the many who continue to serve within our own Crossland family. This year, we’re proud to spotlight Zachary Smith whose four years in the U.S. Army shaped the leader and teammate he is today.
As a Fire Control Specialist (13J) stationed at Fort Hood, Texas, Zachary built a foundation of discipline, accountability, and teamwork that continues to guide his work today.
“I learned to stay calm under pressure, adapt quickly, and lead by example,” he shared. “Those same lessons apply to construction; you depend on your team, communicate clearly, and trust each other to get the job done.”
Transitioning from military to civilian life wasn’t easy. The biggest challenge? Finding a new routine and sense of structure.
“The support from my wife and family meant everything,” he said. “But continuing my passion for construction helped fill the void. I still get to serve, just in a different way.”
Today, Zachary brings the same pride he had wearing the uniform to his role at Crossland.
“In the military, you represent your country. At Crossland, I represent a company built on hard work and integrity. The same values apply.”
This Veterans Day, we also recognize all the veterans across our company. Each has a story of service, sacrifice, and strength that deserves to be celebrated, not just for today, but every day. To show our appreciation, over 100 veterans on our team received a custom hard hat featuring the American flag, a small symbol of our deep gratitude.

“Crossland is the definition of an employee-first company,” Zachary said. “You don’t just have coworkers here, you have family.”
Crossland is also proud to be part of the Hiring Our Heroes program, connecting transitioning service members to meaningful careers in construction. Through this partnership, we’ve welcomed talented veterans who bring leadership, focus, and grit to every jobsite.
From all of us at Crossland, thank you to those who’ve served and continue to serve. Your courage and commitment inspire us daily.
