A Grand Slam in the Floodplain

Shawnee, OK

The Citizen Potawatomi Nation (CPN) Softball Complex stands as a testament to what’s possible when skilled builders meet challenging conditions head-on. This 50-acre athletic facility in Shawnee, OK, features six synthetic turf softball fields that have quickly become a regional destination for tournaments and high school teams across the state.

What makes this project particularly noteworthy isn’t just its scale – it’s how we navigated significant obstacles to deliver exceptional results. The entire complex sits below the 100-year floodplain, creating immediate challenges when design delays prevented work on the east side for six months due to required floodplain modifications that hadn’t been submitted. Rather than letting this setback derail the timeline, we adapted our approach and finished the west side four months ahead of schedule, allowing the Citizen Potawatomi Nation to host their planned tournament on time.

We self-performed extensive concrete work throughout the project, coordinating closely with the owner’s on-site batch plant while simultaneously managing concrete for multiple concurrent projects. Our team installed all doors, hardware, toilet accessories, and specialty items, ensuring quality control across every detail. When subcontractors couldn’t meet our timeline requirements, we stepped in to complete steel handrail installations ourselves.

The facility includes two field complexes, each served by concession stands with press boxes and restroom facilities. The design prioritizes function and durability – brick veneer exteriors, metal panel accents, and covered seating areas built for heavy use. Interior spaces feature practical finishes like sealed concrete floors and stainless-steel countertops in concession areas.

Building in a flood-prone area meant constant vigilance. Record rainfall in 2024 created conditions so severe that people were kayaking in the adjacent parking lot. We managed these challenges by implementing temporary drainage systems and protecting work areas during rain events, never allowing weather to compromise our progress.

The results speak for themselves. Teams now drive hours from across Oklahoma to play at this facility, and the complex stays busy with tournaments and events. What started as a challenging build has become a source of pride for the community and a hub for softball throughout the region.
