Healing Beyond Medicine: Labette Health’s Integrated Care Expansion
Independence, KS
The Labette Health IHC Expansion project transformed healthcare delivery in Independence, Kansas through thoughtful design that prioritizes both clinical efficiency and patient comfort. This 16,000 SF expansion enhanced Labette Health’s ability to provide comprehensive care by creating specialized spaces tailored to community needs.
The project’s centerpiece is the East Expansion – a 14,000 SF addition housing specialty and health clinics with 20 total exam rooms, provider offices, and a new blood work laboratory. Innovation meets practicality with an 800 SF dual-purpose storm-hardened area that functions as both a safety shelter and conference room, demonstrating smart space utilization in healthcare design.
For cancer patients, Crossland delivered a 1,200 SF expansion to the existing Cancer Center, creating six new infusion treatment areas. The team also crafted a serene Healing Garden featuring custom laser-cut stainless steel panels that simulate prairie grasses, flowers, and a starlit sky. This therapeutic outdoor space, visible through a 64-foot curtain wall, offers patients and families a peaceful retreat during challenging treatments.
The project’s third component involved Emergency Department improvements with a reception area remodel accommodating an additional receptionist position and converting an existing office into a dedicated ultrasound room.
Working in an active hospital environment presented significant challenges, particularly when creating four new doorways between existing and new construction. The Crossland team coordinated utility tie-ins and construction activities during off-hours to minimize disruption to patient care – a testament to their healthcare construction expertise.
Completed on time and within budget at $6.56 million, this year-long project exemplifies how thoughtful healthcare construction can support both clinical excellence and the emotional well-being of patients during their healing journey.
