MSU Small Animal Education Center
Small animals, big education at MSU
Springfield, MO
Missouri State University in Springfield has expanded its animal science program with the completion of the new Small Animal Education Center, a $4.3 million facility designed to enhance hands-on learning for students. Completed in summer 2023, the 10,000-square-foot building provides modern, purpose-built spaces tailored to small animal education and care.
The center includes housing for dogs and cats adopted through the Polk County Humane Society, along with a treatment area for routine physical exams. Students also have access to a dedicated research lab and a teaching lab outfitted with digital displays for real-time microscope work—allowing for immersive, tech-supported learning.
Architecturally, the building features concealed fastener metal panels (both horizontal and vertical) paired with an aluminum storefront for a clean, functional exterior. Interior finishes include wood accent walls, concrete masonry units (CMU), kennel gates, and standard small animal enclosures, creating a welcoming yet durable environment.
During construction, the team navigated challenges related to the originally specified metal panels and insulation system, ultimately developing a new installation approach to maintain quality and schedule. Equipment delays also required active coordination and flexibility.
Close collaboration with Missouri State University was key to the project’s success, particularly regarding vendor qualifications, HVAC specifications, and access control systems. The result is a specialized facility that advances animal science education while supporting the university’s commitment to hands-on, real-world training.
