Building Safety: Expanding services in Blue Springs

Blue Springs, MO

In a city like Blue Springs, Missouri, where growth is constant, so are the needs for expanded services.

In 2022, Crossland worked with Jackson County to construct a new fire station that would serve the southern part of their county. The aim? To reduce response times in an already bustling district, according to the fire chief.

The 9,800 SF, $3.9 million Southern Jackson County Fire Station No. 3 features two drive-thru apparatus bays alongside additional bunk rooms and workspace to accommodate the dedicated firefighters.

Outside, Crossland employed a PEMB structure wrapped in metal panels and accented with brick wainscoting, lending the station a modern yet sturdy facade.

Inside, no detail was spared with LVT flooring in corridors, complemented by plush carpeting in offices and bunk rooms. Bathrooms and showers feature durable tile finishes. A highlight is the commercial kitchen, complete with an inviting outdoor patio and seating area.

Noteworthy is the innovative Airvac system in the apparatus bay, ensuring efficient filtration of air, a crucial element for equipment maintenance.

This project presented a particularly unique challenge for our team, as there was no permanent power on the site until the project was near completion. So, this station was built using temporary power for most of the construction schedule. This made final electrical terminations and transfers very labor-intensive once the permanent power equipment was delivered.

Another challenge was the sewer plan. We had to pivot from the anticipated sewer plan to a septic system and get the city’s approval. We were able to find a reputable engineer to design a septic system that was indeed approved.

A temporary solution was implemented until adjacent development could provide permanent sanitary facilities.

The result was a very nice public safety facility to be proud of, and that would help keep the Blue Springs community safe.
