OTC, Training for the Future in Springfield

Springfield, MO

Advances in technology and artificial intelligence are changing how we work seemingly every day.

Keeping up with those changes will be critical to ensuring a quality, skilled workforce of the future.

That’s the spirit behind the Robert W. Plaster Center for Advanced Manufacturing at Ozark Technical College in Springfield, MO. The 120,000-square-foot facility is the largest building project in OTC’s history.

The center houses seven of the college’s technical training programs, including Automation and Robotics, Cybersecurity, Drafting and Design, Information Technology Infrastructure, Manufacturing Technology, Mechatronics, and Precision Machining.

Crossland’s $24.5 million contract on the project included the self-performance of concrete, structural steel, and earthwork.

Exterior features included veneer metal panel, curtain wall, and several architectural features, such as a stainless steel canopy on the front façade.

Interior features include polished concrete and a large, open, two-story space near the back of the facility that allows for easy transport of machinery and equipment.

Initiated in December 2020, the project encountered material delays due to the pandemic. Overcoming these setbacks, Crossland secured approvals for new materials. The project further navigated through weather-related delays, showcasing our adaptability and commitment to success.

Crossland supplemented various work with our own crews, including the polished concrete, roofing, painting, and dirt work.

Through it all, however, Crossland finished on time and even under budget.

The beautiful new facility is a game-changer for manufacturing in the Midwest and beyond. According to the OTC website, the Plaster Manufacturing Center’s economic impact on the region will be more than $400 million.

OTC’s Chancellor, Dr. Hal Higdon said: “As the first advanced manufacturing training facility in the state, the PMC will not only educate the next generation of workers, but it will attract new businesses to the area looking to hire these highly skilled graduates.”

The project earned the college a nomination for the Springfield Contractors Association Developer of the Year Award.
