Cafeteria + shelter for elementary students

Pittsburg, KS

The Lakeside Elementary School FEMA shelter project had a Construction Manager at Risk contract value of $2.4 million. What now doubles as the cafeteria, the shelter is connected to the school in two locations, with ADA accessible paths to allow everyone in the school to access the new cafeteria space. The kitchen is not considered hardened space, but teams installed storm-rated doors to close the kitchen off from the shelter.

Exterior finishes include brick and exterior insulation finishing, which blend seamlessly with the existing structure. Interior finishes include exposed precast walls in the cafeteria. The kitchen has stainless steel and fiberglass re-enforced plastic walls for cleanability and longevity. Communication with school staff and the local fire marshal kept the occupants of the existing facility safe during construction. The project was completed on time and on budget.
