Innovative medical care at St. Francis

Tulsa, OK

As technology propels medical care forward, the construction industry must also take steps to meet the evolving healthcare technology and landscape. Fortunately, problem-solving and building beyond what you thought possible is our specialty.

Take the Francis Hospital in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where Crossland was tasked with constructing two cutting-edge hybrid operating rooms (ORs). These specialized facilities are designed to enhance safety and efficiency for both patients and surgical teams.

Hybrid ORs offer myriad advantages, from expanding procedural capabilities to improving patient outcomes and optimizing room utilization. The $7.2 million project commenced with the delicate demolition of existing operating rooms, conducted within an active surgical suite to minimize disruptions. Crossland utilized our in-house D.O.W.N. program, created specifically for healthcare construction, keeping Dust, Odor, Water, and Noise, DOWN. This internal program takes the ICRA compliance a step further making sure construction does not impact patient care or safety.

Once cleared, the space was transformed into the hospital’s first-ever hybrid ORs, alongside two additional standard ORs, a surgery support office area, and a training room. The marvels of technology awaited within, exemplified by Siemens ARTIS Pheno machines, enabling surgeons to conduct x-rays seamlessly during surgery—a feat previously requiring patient relocation.

Interior design considerations prioritized durability and cleanliness, featuring terrazzo flooring and stainless steel walls in the operating rooms, while back-of-house corridors boasted terrazzo and wall protection.

A unique challenge on this project was maneuvering massive steel beams into the central sterile unit below the ORs—a space crucial for equipment sterilization. Diligent coordination was pivotal, ensuring pristine conditions despite the intricate logistics.

Crossland took over this project when the original contractor faltered. Our healthcare team’s commitment to excellence and agility shined through as they ended up expanding the project scope and accelerated the timeline, delivering two months ahead of schedule.

This success story emphasizes Crossland’s dedication to our values and delivering for our building partners. With the invaluable support of the healthcare team and a project crew willing to go the extra mile, together, they’ve set a new standard. The result, an innovative medical facility, enriching the St. Francis community allowing them to continue with their commitment stellar patient care.
