Continued Growth in Melissa, Texas

Melissa, TX

Melissa ISD is one of the fastest-growing school districts in Texas.

Their campus continued to grow in 2023 when the district opened its fourth and newest elementary school, Sumner Elementary.

This 81,000 SF, $25.7 million facility is not your typical elementary school. After all, everything is bigger in Texas.

This new design for Melissa Elementary School featured a two-story campus with a courtyard in the center of it all.

The exterior finishes include brick on the majority of the building, with some metal panels and soffits. A canopy wraps approximately half of the building. A full 20,000 SF turf field sits next to the playground area.

Inside, the K-5 school has a tile floor throughout the main corridor, with carpet going down the classroom corridor with tile wainscoting. There are also wood T&G ceilings throughout the main corridor, cafeteria, and library.

The center courtyard is a unique feature not seen in most school projects. It is used as a learning area for the teachers and has various benches for teaching classes.

Another unique feature is the storm shelter in the gymnasium area. It was a pre-cast storm shelter that took months of coordination to ensure there was no exposed conduit throughout the gym.

Effective coordination and communication played a vital role in this project. Initially, our team encountered challenges in securing utility and concrete pour dates. Our team demonstrated leadership and patience in coordinating with the developer, ensuring timely project completion for the upcoming school year.

In the final two months, the Crossland team rallied together to meet the schedule. Despite facing some challenges, our internal teamwork prevailed, allowing us to deliver a successfully completed project to our client.
