Keeping Operations Airborne While Building Anew
Garden City, KS
Maintaining a fully functional airport terminal while simultaneously rebuilding it from the ground up isn’t for the faint of heart. At Garden City Regional Airport, Crossland Construction proved it could be done – and done well.
This 25,900 SF terminal overhaul was anything but simple. From day one, the mission was clear: keep flights moving and passengers safe while delivering a modern facility that meets today’s travel expectations. Through strategic phasing, thoughtful logistics, and constant coordination with airport personnel, Crossland ensured that not a single day of operations was lost. Arriving passengers, TSA checkpoints, baggage claim, everything remained open, just behind carefully orchestrated construction zones.
The new terminal design strikes a balance between form and function. Unique “Arrival” and “Departure” architectural features anchor the exterior, brought to life through precise detailing and craftsmanship. A mix of sleek metal panels – including rich wood-look finishes – creates a contemporary but warm façade, while floor-to-ceiling curtainwalls and automated glass doors brighten the interior.
Inside, the attention to detail continues. Travelers now move through spaces finished with terrazzo flooring, wood-look ceilings, and acoustic felt panels that elevate the travel experience. When initial materials couldn’t withstand airport foot traffic, Crossland tapped internal experts across divisions to troubleshoot and quickly pivot to a more durable solution – demonstrating the advantages of their integrated, hands-on approach.
Over 23 months, Crossland self-performed multiple scopes, from concrete and steel to finish carpentry, keeping quality and momentum in sync. Prefab elements also played a key role in streamlining the schedule without compromising aesthetics.
The result: a state-of-the-art terminal that serves as a bold new welcome to Western Kansas – built without grounding a single flight.
