Building Independence Every Day

Joplin, MO

Adults with learning disabilities in Joplin now have a state-of-the-art facility dedicated to teaching essential life skills, thanks to our comprehensive renovation of the Community Support Services building. This 29,908 SF transformation created specialized educational spaces where individuals learn cooking, household management, and independent living skills that help them thrive in their communities.

The renovation breathed new life into the existing facility. What started as an 8-month project became a journey of discovery, with our team navigating unexpected conditions that revealed the building’s hidden history. During demolition, we uncovered thick concrete walls and glass panels that had been covered over decades, requiring creative problem-solving to maintain the project vision while working around these architectural surprises.

We handled multiple trades in-house, including demolition, rough carpentry, concrete work, and steel installation. This self-performance approach gave us direct control over quality and scheduling, which proved crucial when dealing with the unexpected structural elements we encountered. Our team worked carefully around large steel beams and managed the complex installation of a specialized safe room – a unique safety feature that required precise coordination and planning.

The heart of this facility lies in its educational kitchen spaces, designed specifically for teaching real-world cooking and meal preparation skills. These aren’t typical commercial kitchens but rather learning environments where adults can practice daily tasks in a supportive setting. The renovation created bright, accessible spaces that encourage independence while providing the safety and supervision needed for skill development.

We worked closely with Community Support Services of Missouri to adapt the design as needs evolved and unexpected conditions emerged. This collaborative approach allowed for thoughtful solutions when structural surprises arose, ensuring the final facility met all programmatic requirements without compromising safety or functionality.

Our team transformed a dated building into a modern facility that serves a vital community need. The renovation demonstrates how construction can directly impact lives – creating spaces where individuals develop confidence and skills that lead to greater independence. We delivered the project on time and within the revised budget, maintaining focus on the client’s mission throughout the construction process.
