Safety and Security at the Heart of Columbus Central Elementary Renovation
Columbus, KS
The $11 million renovation of Columbus Central Elementary School in Columbus, Kansas, prioritized safety and security, transforming the campus into a unified, modern facility. The project consolidated multiple buildings under one roof, creating a 47,000 SF space that allows students and staff to move freely while remaining indoors. This ensures protection from both weather and potential outdoor threats.
The renovation included additional classrooms, office space and library, a playground, and a new cafeteria/kitchen, which doubles as a storm shelter, offering both functionality and peace of mind. Crossland’s in-house concrete prefab company, Crossland Prefab, was utilized for the concrete panel walls for the storm shelter. This approach not only streamlined the construction process but also ensured high-quality craftsmanship and efficiency.
Exterior finishes feature metal panels and brick, carefully selected to match the school’s existing brick façade. Additional upgrades include canopies, bulletproof glass, and new concrete in the parking area. Inside, the school showcases woodwork, vibrant splashes of color, and creative graphics that promote school spirit. Polished concrete floors were added for easy maintenance, while CMU block ensures long-term durability.
Overcoming Unique Challenges
The project came with its share of challenges:
• Elevation Changes: Managing water flow across the campus and working with multiple rooflines required extensive utility relocation and replacement of damaged systems.
• Active Campus: Construction took place while school was in session, necessitating careful planning to ensure the safety of students and staff as they navigated paths near the construction site.
• Aging Infrastructure: Renovating a 70-year-old building brought unexpected issues, such as walls and plumbing systems that deteriorated during the process.
Through tireless effort and careful coordination, the Crossland team ensured the safety and well-being of everyone on campus while delivering a high-quality facility.
A Lasting Impact
This project is more than a renovation; it’s a transformation that will reshape the educational experience for students, staff, and the community. It’s deeply rewarding to know that our work has provided a safe, modern, and inspiring environment for future generations.
