Andover 13th Street Park
Upgraded Park Offers Many Amenities to Andover Residents
Andover, KS
The City of Andover’s vision for enhanced recreational opportunities became reality through a comprehensive transformation of their beloved 13th Street Sports Park. This ambitious 40-acre project represented the second half of Andover’s Family Future Forward Bond initiative, following Crossland’s successful completion of the city’s new fire station.
What began as an aging community park evolved into a modern recreational hub featuring an entirely new infrastructure. The project encompassed complete reconstruction of existing amenities while introducing exciting new features that would serve families for generations. A state-of-the-art splash pad became the centerpiece, complemented by renovated ball diamonds, modern pickleball courts, expanded soccer fields, and resurfaced tennis courts.
The scope extended far beyond recreational facilities. Crossland’s team tackled extensive civil engineering challenges, including a complete trail system overhaul with one mile of new paving, expanded parking facilities, and upgraded concession and restroom buildings. Every element required careful coordination to meet stringent FEMA floodplain regulations, adding complexity to the already ambitious timeline.
Weather presented the project’s greatest obstacle, with outdoor work vulnerable to Kansas’s unpredictable conditions from start to finish. The construction team developed innovative scheduling strategies to maintain momentum despite seasonal challenges. Site coordination proved crucial, with crews working systematically from the deepest excavation points outward to prevent conflicts and maximize efficiency.
The project’s success stemmed from strategic planning that prioritized a critical spring 2024 deadline. With youth baseball seasons depending on timely completion, the team maintained an aggressive schedule while ensuring quality standards never wavered. This commitment to community needs drove every decision throughout the 14-month construction period.
The transformation delivered immediate community impact, with families now enjoying enhanced recreational opportunities that will benefit Andover for decades. Children splash joyfully in the new water feature while athletes of all ages utilize improved courts and fields. The park’s complete infrastructure renewal ensures reliable service and minimal maintenance for years ahead.
