Delivering a Game-Changing Middle School Campus
Melissa, TX
The heart of any thriving community beats strongest in its schools. When Melissa ISD envisioned a comprehensive educational facility that would serve their growing community for decades to come, they needed more than just classrooms – they needed a complete campus that could nurture young minds while building strong bodies and team spirit.
We delivered a 225,000 SF middle school that redefines what educational facilities can achieve. Spanning 89 acres in Melissa, Texas, this $99.4 million project creates a learning environment where 6th through 8th graders can explore academics, athletics, and arts under one cohesive design.
The facility’s athletic components set it apart from typical middle schools. We built dual gymnasiums – a competition gym for games and events alongside a practice gym for daily physical education. The weight room rivals what you’d find at high schools, giving students early access to proper fitness training. Outside, a full football field with track provides space for team sports and individual fitness goals.
What makes this project truly unique is the dedicated golf facility. We constructed a separate 2,500-3,000 SF building complete with driving range and putting green, introducing students to a sport they can enjoy throughout their lives. Four tennis courts round out the athletic offerings, creating opportunities for students to discover their athletic passions.
Safety drove several key design decisions. The gymnasiums double as storm shelters, constructed with insulated concrete forms (ICF) to protect students and community members during severe weather events. This dual-purpose design reflects smart planning that serves the community beyond school hours.
Inside, we focused on creating inspiring learning spaces. Science classrooms and labs encourage hands-on exploration, while specialized resource rooms include mobile patient lifts for students with diverse needs. The two-story design maximizes space efficiency while maintaining accessibility through elevator access.
The performing arts areas give students multiple venues to express creativity. A full stage accommodates large productions, while a black box theater provides intimate performance space for smaller shows. The media center serves as both library and collaborative learning hub, supporting both traditional study and modern digital learning approaches.
Throughout construction, we maintained focus on the project’s ultimate deadline – students arriving for the new school year. Our detailed scheduling approach kept all trades coordinated, ensuring long-lead materials arrived precisely when needed. This coordination allowed us to complete the project ahead of schedule and under budget, a critical achievement given the non-negotiable nature of school opening dates.
The polished floors throughout the facility showcase attention to detail that students, teachers, and families notice daily. Combined with carefully selected tile work and the prominent school crest mural in the main entrance, these finishes create an environment that inspires pride in the school community.
This project demonstrates how thoughtful planning and skilled execution can create educational facilities that serve multiple generations. From the storm-safe gymnasiums to the unique golf facility, every element supports the district’s vision of comprehensive education that prepares students for success in academics, athletics, and life.
