Heavy New Office
New Headquarters for Crossland Heavy Contractors in Columbus, Kansas
Columbus, KS
Some buildings are designed to support the work. Others are built to reflect it.
The new home office for Crossland Heavy Contractors in Columbus does both. Located adjacent to the existing Crossland campus, this two-story facility brings the heavy civil team into a space that matches the scale and complexity of the work they take on every day.
At just under 18,000 square feet, the building was designed with function in mind. Each floor includes dedicated workspace and kitchen areas, creating a layout that supports daily operations without overcomplicating how teams move through the space. An elevator connects both levels, adding convenience, but also introducing one of the more complex coordination points during construction.
From the outside, the structure ties into the surrounding campus with metal panel systems that align with nearby facilities. Inside, the approach shifts. Concrete floors run throughout both levels, paired with glass doors and open elements that bring in light and create a more connected feel across the workspace. Subtle design details, from feature elements like the concrete panel with the company’s logo prefabricated by Crossland Prefab, to custom lighting, add depth without overstatement.
This project also highlights what it looks like when capabilities work together. Crossland Prefab played a key role in delivering precast concrete panels, while self-perform crews handled critical scopes including earthwork, concrete, steel, and carpentry. That level of control allowed the team to stay responsive, especially when early site elevation challenges required adjustment before vertical construction could fully move forward.
Like many projects, some of the toughest moments weren’t obvious on paper. Fine-tuning site elevation, coordinating elevator installation, and dialing in architectural details like exterior “eyebrow” elements required attention at the right time.
The result is a building that does exactly what it should. It supports the team, reflects the work, and strengthens the presence of Crossland Heavy Contractors as part of the broader Crossland footprint.
