8th & Easy Tunnel
Rogers, AR
The 8th & Easy Tunnel project in Rogers replaced a hazardous at-grade crossing with a grade-separated route for pedestrians and cyclists beneath the busy 8th Street Gateway. Designed to improve safety, mobility, and connectivity, the tunnel now connects directly to the City of Rogers Greenway system, serving as both a practical transportation feature and a local landmark.
The project included a 220-foot precast concrete tunnel, 2,000 linear feet of multi-use trail, and 0.3 miles of connected trails and sidewalks. Stormwater management, safety lighting, landscaping, and specialty signage were also incorporated. The team installed 14,000 square feet of precast retaining wall and laid 4,000 square feet of permeable paver parking, placing over 394 cubic yards of concrete. Crossland Heavy Contractors self-performed approximately 45% of the work, including excavation, concrete placement, grading, and paving, giving direct oversight on critical elements and accountability.
A standout feature of the tunnel is its vibrant public art. Rogers-based artist Erin Ashcraft created a 120-foot mural titled “Hey Neighbor,” inspired by the local parks and landscapes. The mural welcomes visitors with bold messages and local flora and fauna, turning the tunnel into a shared community space that reflects Rogers’ spirit. This integration of art with infrastructure provides both inspiration and a sense of connection for trail users, cyclists, and families.
Project management emphasized detailed pre-planning, utility coordination, and disciplined sequencing. A focused crew completed excavation, tunnel placement, and roadway restoration during a single 48-hour weekend closure, maintaining one-lane traffic during shoring installation. Collaboration with ARDOT, utility owners, and subcontractors helped avoid impacts, address conflicts quickly, and maintain the project schedule and budget.
This $5.1 million project was finished in seven months, resulting in a durable, functional, and visually engaging tunnel that enhances safety, mobility, and community connectivity.
