When Cherokee Nation envisioned a specialized early childhood learning center in Salina, Oklahoma, they needed more than just another building – they wanted a space that would honor their cultural heritage while providing modern educational facilities for pre-K and toddler-aged children.

We partnered with Cherokee Nation and Blue River Architects to bring this vision to life. The 18,383 SF facility represents a large investment in the community’s future, completed eleven days ahead of schedule in December 2025.

The project required specialized design considerations throughout. Every detail was sized appropriately for young children, from multiple bathrooms and showers designed for tiny users to classroom spaces optimized for early learning activities. Our self-performed concrete work provided the foundation for both the main building and an extensive outdoor playground area.

Cultural elements were woven throughout the interior design, creating an environment that celebrates Cherokee heritage. The centerpiece is a stunning $20,000 decorative tree that serves as both an educational focal point and gathering space for children and staff.

The outdoor learning environment features specialized playground equipment, rubber flooring, and specialty mats designed for safe, active play. These materials required careful coordination during installation to meet safety standards for young children while maintaining durability for daily use.

Using our CM at-risk approach allowed us to manage costs effectively while maintaining quality throughout the build process. Our prefab capabilities helped streamline construction timelines, contributing to the early completion that allowed Cherokee Nation to open their doors ahead of schedule.

The facility now serves pre-kindergarten and toddler-aged children with dedicated classrooms, activity areas, and outdoor spaces designed specifically for early childhood development. Seeing children using the playground and learning spaces for the first time reinforced why projects like this matter – they create lasting impact in communities where families live, learn, and grow.
