Creating Community Connections in Basehor
Basehor, KS
Crossland Construction partnered with the City of Basehor to develop a vibrant 7-acre community gathering space designed to bring residents together. The Basehor Civic Campus features an inviting splash pad as its centerpiece, complemented by a park, amphitheater, and sledding hill – all connected by an integrated network of sidewalks and trails.
Working as Construction Manager at Risk with a $2.6 million budget, our team delivered significant value during pre-construction. By replacing the originally specified prefabricated restroom building with CMU block construction, we achieved cost savings of $100,000. This value-engineering approach allowed us to return unused contingency funds to the client at project completion.
When facing schedule challenges due to extended lead times for the amphitheater, our team implemented strategic solutions to maintain the project timeline. We also addressed an unexpected issue with the owner-supplied turf company by stepping in to lay rock foundations, ensuring children wouldn’t be playing in mud while waiting for turf installation.
The campus design intentionally creates a central community hub where families can gather, play, and participate in regular events like “Third Thursdays.” Perhaps most rewarding was our ability to repurpose excess dirt from the City Hall site to create a sledding hill near the park area, adding an unexpected winter recreation option for local families.
The Basehor Civic Campus stands as a testament to thoughtful municipal design that encourages community engagement through multi-seasonal recreational opportunities.
