Sometimes, when challenges arise, the solutions can be somewhat straightforward.
At other times, those problems require creative thinking and design.
The latter was definitely the case during HVAC and security upgrades at Emory Elementary School in Lakewood, Colorado.
As part of the $1.8 million project, a new 40-foot chiller was installed, along with all new pumps and piping. The chiller happened to be a new model and was the first of this particular design.
To start the chiller, two valves underneath it had to be turned. However, the chiller was designed to sit flat on the concrete, so our team worked with the manufacturer to design a stand to raise the chiller so that the valves would be accessible.
This process also required a crane to raise the larger chiller so that the new stand could be installed.
On the security side of the project, new exterior doors and transaction windows were installed. Inside, we reconfigured the offices with drywall, paint, ceiling tiles, and new interior signage. The doors and windows featured lockdown and ADA buttons for access control.
Despite the complexities of working around operating hours with students on-site, our team diligently coordinated with the district to schedule work during weekends and holidays, minimizing disruption to normal school operations.
