The Canyons
Scenic Oasis in Colorado
Castle Pines, CO
The Madison at Canyons, a unique apartment-style residential complex in Castle Pines, CO, promises “a scenic escape from the bustling city.”
Located less than an hour south of Denver, the complex feels like a world away from the hustle and bustle of metro life.
This $67 million, 436,461 SF project features a 325-unit garden-style apartment complex with 14 apartment buildings, a clubhouse, a mail building, a maintenance building, and six stand-alone garage buildings.
It was built using wood frame construction with fiber cement siding. It features tuck-under garages in apartment buildings, a detention pond, a playground, a dog park, and more.
The clubhouse and amenity buildings’ exterior finishes include board-form veneer (wood-look masonry). The heated pool and spa feature indoor and outdoor patios with gas grills. The fitness building has a yoga studio overlooking the pool deck.
The clubhouse’s main room has a Nanawall, an operable glass system that opens to the pool deck. Amenity buildings have standing seam metal roofs, and apartment buildings have shingle and TPO roofs. The fiber cement siding features black windows and patio doors. All apartments include balconies with metal handrails. Multiple pitches on apartment building roofs create an aesthetically pleasing roof line.
The apartments boast ceramic tile backsplash in kitchens, tile surrounds in showers/tubs, stone countertops in the kitchens, LVT flooring throughout the apartments, and hardwood flooring in the Clubhouse and amenity spaces.
As the website states, it truly is an “accessible oasis.”
Rocky Roads
Building in or near the mountains is bound to bring some logistical challenges.
The site conditions were particularly difficult due to the 80-foot elevation difference from the north to south property lines. This caused severe grading challenges and called for an extensive utility/infrastructure package.
The weather was also a major factor, as the area received several heavy snow and rain events during construction. Flooding at multiple buildings triggered a civil redesign, which Crossland helped implement as we moved through the completion of the original project scope.
Solid Teamwork
Throughout the process, the significance of a robust team environment became evident.
Crossland collaborated closely with the ownership and design teams to overcome these obstacles. Navigating multiple design changes to maintain project momentum while addressing recurring flooding and erosion issues, our team worked in tandem with ownership to monitor costs, handle schedule delays, and implement necessary design modifications.
Crossland’s field team exhibited exceptional dedication and extended hours on a challenging project.
The consistent efforts of ownership, design, construction, city officials, local fire department/inspection, county SWPP authorities, water district, and numerous others were crucial to the project’s remarkable success.
