Getting Creative in Lewisville

Lewisville, TX

The City of Lewisville, Texas, hired Crossland to build a new Facilities and Fleet Maintenance Facility for its vehicles.

The 34,000 SF, $14.5 million facility would be a game-changer for the city.

The site features a mezzanine, a fuel oil storage area and station, vehicle lifts, workstations for mechanics,14 service bays, and five bays for heavy equipment. The shop space is joined by an office area and meeting spaces for the staff.

The concrete exterior was built with a combination of tilt-wall with inset reveals and structural steel framing with tile and metal panel siding.

Unexpected Obstacles
When it comes to construction projects, one should always anticipate the unexpected. In our case, a significant hurdle arose when we encountered an issue with a retaining wall near the adjacent pond during the construction phase.

Our primary challenge was to devise a viable solution that would not strain the budget and could even contribute positively to the project’s finances. To tackle this, our teams collaborated closely with the design team to identify an appropriate remedy.

The Decision-Making Process
Numerous discussions took place with civil engineers, exploring various alternatives such as different wall designs or adjustments to the existing one. Ultimately, we made the strategic decision to completely remove the wall and introduce substantial aggregates into the soil base to create a stable surface.

Up to The Challenge
This experience proved to be a valuable learning opportunity for our team. It highlighted the importance of staying vigilant about factors like water tables on the construction site, especially when there are nearby ponds or bodies of water that could impact the project.

The end result is a beautiful and state-of-the-art facility. Witnessing the admiration and excitement of all the city leaders as they admired their new facility was an incredibly rewarding moment.
