Wamego, KS replaced their 33-year-old deteriorating city swimming pool with a new aquatic center in the same location with features that appeal to all Wamego residents, from toddlers to senior citizens.
The aquatic center's final design was created following input from Wamego citizens and satisfied all community expectations from outdoor and indoor pools. The outdoor aquatic facility showcases a lazy river, diving boards, multiple slides, children's splash park, concession stand with seating area, and indoor changing rooms, showers, and restrooms. The indoor pool enables the facility to be utilized year-round by water exercise participants and swim teams. The indoor area also features a party room to host meetings and birthday parties.
Wamego leadership wanted to make sure the new facility would stand the test of time, so Crossland used colored concrete masonry unit (CMU) walls for the exterior finish and hardy siding and shingles for the bathhouse. The indoor pool also has CMU walls and acoustical ceilings to help minimize the noise level that often accompanies indoor pool areas.
Construction had to be done during the offseason so that Wamego residents could enjoy the new aquatic center during the upcoming summer. Though many construction days were lost to a challenging winter and multiple heavy rain events, Crossland completed the project on time and within budget.
